Operation Boxer was a clandestine raid on the shipping lanes in the harbour at Beira, Mozambique, conducted in September 1979. It marked the first combat diving operation by the newly established Special Forces seaborne unit, 4 Reconnaissance Regiment.
Executed with support from the South African Navy (SAN), the mission faced significant challenges, including rough sea conditions, the covert neutralisation of enemy personnel using silenced weapons, and technical issues such as the premature detonation of explosive charges. Join us on Saturday 16 May 2026 for a firsthand account of the operation from those directly involved:
- Johan Botes – Team Leader
- Cobus Potgieter – Attack Diver
- Admiral (Ret.) Arnè Söderlund – Commander of SAS P1562 (SAN strike craft) and co-author of the book Iron Fist from the Sea.
