Operation Gwarri is a story of overcoming extreme adversity.
This operation unfolded in August 1987 in the dense, dry, and rugged terrain of the Lubango region in Angola. SWAPO’s Western Regional Headquarters in southwestern Angola was the next target in 1 Recce’s sights.
In mid-August 1987, Major Renier Coetzee and two team members were inserted by Puma helicopter, using Sky Genie to lower themselves and their heavy equipment into the inhospitable terrain of Bicuar National Park. Their backpacks weighed approximately 80–110 kg, laden with water, ammunition, rations, and other operational essentials.
After establishing a suitable rendezvous point, they were joined by 15 additional team members. These men deployed in five two-man reconnaissance teams to search for the target, while the remaining five formed a reaction force. Moving through the dense terrain, they crawled long distances to reach a pre-determined lying-up position. Major Coetzee then sent the reconnaissance teams in various directions in search of the SWAPO headquarters.
Staff Sergeant Justin Vermaak and his teammate, Sergeant Johnny de Gouveia, were the last team to deploy in a westerly direction. Early one morning, their position was compromised, and they soon found themselves in a fierce firefight. Forced to break contact, they ran for their lives. Over the next 48 hours, multiple engagements took place as they attempted to evade the enemy.
By late afternoon, utterly exhausted and dehydrated, the two operators could run no further. Instead, they took up an ambush position, bracing for the inevitable. Twice wounded, Sergeant de Gouveia handed his last few rounds to Justin, keeping only one for himself. He turned to him and said: “You know what this last round is meant for.” Then, with unwavering resolve, he turned to face the pursuing enemy for the final fight…
This evening’s story highlights why the Recces are regarded among the world’s most elite special forces. It will leave listeners inspired by the courage and resilience required to face extreme adversity when all the odds are against you.
