Operation Agony unfolded in November 1980 in the rugged terrain of Angola, marked by a pivotal aircraft hunting mission.
Concealed beneath thick foliage, the team hears the unmistakable hum of a Russian transport plane. Identifying it as an Antonov 26, a medium-sized transport aircraft, the team swiftly moves to an open vantage point, scanning the sky for the approaching target. At an altitude of approximately 3000 meters, bathed in the perfection of a morning sun, the aircraft comes into view.
Frans, the protagonist of this high-stakes endeavour, readies the missile for launch, with James, his assistant on the weapon, maintaining a vigilant gaze on the aircraft. As Frans aligns the weapon with the aircraft, the weapon’s infrared targeting system emits a reassuring confirmation of a flawless lock-on. With precision, he squeezes the trigger, unleashing the missile that streaks through the sky, leaving behind a visible trail of smoke on its trajectory toward the intended target . . .
Join us at Fort Outeniqua for an intimate account of this extraordinary operation. Frans will regale firsthand the gripping details of the mission and recount the subsequent events that added to this exceptional operation.
