Operation Vimbezela, famously known as the Battle of Bangui, unfolded in the Central African Republic (CAR) in 2013, pitting a small South African military contingent against the formidable Séléka rebel alliance opposing the ruling government. Despite numbering fewer than 200 soldiers, the South African forces confronted a staggering enemy force of over 7,500 combatants, creating a stark 36:1 numerical disadvantage. This intense engagement spanned three grueling days, with one particular confrontation lasting over 9 hours and even escalating to hand-to-hand combat. The South African troops expended more than 10 tons of ammunition during this harrowing conflict.
Amidst this lopsided confrontation, thirteen courageous paratroopers bravely gave their lives defending the base, with an additional two succumbing to injuries sustained in the battle later on and twenty-seven others were wounded. The enemy suffered heavy casualties, with over 1,000 soldiers killed or injured.
It was the biggest odds against own forces, from a force-on-force perspective, since the establishment of the SANDF in 1994, highlighting numerous displays of valour. In recognition of their bravery, three SA Military Units—1 Parachute Battalion, 5 Reconnaissance Regiment, and 7 Medical Battalion—were bestowed with battle honours, allowing them to incorporate the name “Bangui” into their unit flags and colours. Join us for an exclusive opportunity to hear Brigadier General (retired) Coetzee’s firsthand account, providing an insider’s perspective on this historic battle’s unfolding events. Additionally, Captain Engelbrecht will share his experiences as an active participant in the battle.
